PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and instrument for measuring three-dimensional shape by which highly reliable distance information can be acquired collectively. SOLUTION: A three-dimensional shape measuring instrument is provided with a light emitting device 1 which emits a plurality of planar light 2 upon an object 3 to be measured and an image pickup device 4 which picks up the reflected image of the object 3 and measures the distance to the object 3 by using the time for the emission of the planar light 2 to the picking up of the reflected image by means of the image pickup device 4. When the instrument measures the distance to the object 3, the distance measurement is performed by encoding the order of the emitted plane light rays 2 in accordance with, for example, M-series codes and decoding the reflected images of the encoded plane light rays 2.
