PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance reliability, to lower insertion loss and to enable easy manufacture by joining a pair of dielectric substrates formed with polarization layers on one main surface side to each other on the other main surface side, providing the other main surface side of the one dielectric substrate with a recessed part and disposing a planar Faraday rotator in this recessed part. SOLUTION: A polarizar 1 and analyzer 2 formed with the polarization layers on one-side main surfaces 1a, 2a are prepd. and the recessed parts 2c for holding the 45 deg. Faraday rotator 3 are formed on the other-side main surfaces 1b, 2b of both. Next, the Faraday rotator 3 is arranged in the recessed parts. At this time, the angle of the 45 deg. Faraday rotator 3 does not depend on the crystal faces and, therefore, there is no need for angle regulation, etc. The analyzer 2 is covered from above and the angle of the analyzer 2 is so regulated as to maximize the transmittance. A prescribed adhesive material is then applied thereon to adhere the analyzer. The same material is used for the dielectric substrates of the polarizer 1 and the analyzer 2 to enable the sure sealing of the Faraday rotator 3 part and, therefore, the optical isolator which is smaller in size and higher in reliability is embodied.
