PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external memory device and a memory medium cartridge which can display and erase information corresponding to data stored in a memory device with small power consumption and at a low cost. SOLUTION: An external memory device stores data in a recording medium 4 and/or erases data from a recording medium 4. A magnetic recording head 7 which records information corresponding to data stored in the recording medium 4 by magnetic action in a display unit 6 which is composed of magnetic powder with a predetermined color tone, holding material which has color tone different from the color tone of the magnetic powder and is mixed with the magnetic powder to hold the magnetic powder and an enclosing container which is approximately transparent and in which the magnetic powder and the holding material are enclosed and formed in a recording medium cartridge 5 in which the memory medium 4 is housed is provided.
