An invalid chair, having arm and foot rests secured to side frames (10) as described in Specification 1,141,145 comprises a collapsible seat (17) supported by two side frames (10) connected together by two linkages for movement towards and away from each other, each linkage comprising two long links 18, 19 and two short links 20, 21 of which each long link, 18 or 19, is pivoted to a rod 24 of a frame (10), and to a short link 20 or 21 which is pivoted at 25 to a member 26 of the other frame (10), the long links 18, 19 being pivoted together at 27 and having toggle means for releasably holding them in the relative position to prevent movement of the frames towards each other; alternatively, in another embodiment (not shown), the long links 18, 19 project upwardly from their pivots on the frames (10) to meet the short links 20, 21 which are made short so as not to interfere with the seat (17). Each toggle means comprises a first arm 28 pivoted at 30 to the long link 19, and at 31 to a second arm 29 which is pivoted at 32 to the long link 18, the overcentre being reached when the arm 29 abuts the pivot 27. A lever 36 is pivoted at 37 to the member 26 and is rotatable by a knob 39 to engage a portion 35 connected to the arm 29 to move the arms to the overcentre position, or to engage its arm 40 to engage the portion 35 to disengage the arms from the overcentre position. The linkages are connected by a rod 33. |
