PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image input optical system capable of lessening the occurrence of smear in an image pickup element by providing this element with a diaphragm having a shape in a horizontal direction coinciding with the shape of the photodetecting part of the image pickup element. SOLUTION: A light regulating plate 1 and the diaphragm 2 are inserted into an image input optical system consisting of plural lenses. The image plane of the image input optical system is provided with the image pickup element 3 consisting of a CCD. The image pickup element 3 consists of photodetecting parts and perpendicular transfer parts disposed in a matrix form. The photodetecting parts are composed of, for example, photodiodes and generate the charges proportional to the intensity of the received light. The diaphragm 2 is capable of adequately regulating luminous fluxes with respect to the photodetecting parts. The diaphragm 2 is formed to an oval shape in such a manner, by which the luminous fluxes in the horizontal direction are cut and the occurrence of the smear is suppressed. The signal charges may be effectively generated by increasing the irradiation to the perpendicular direction.
