The present invention discloses the efficacy of loop diuretics, such as Furosemide on inhibition of the growth of HIV virus and augmentation of cell growth of ex vivo peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from AIDS patients. The infected cells of the patients were compared with healthy donor's PBMC response to Furosemide. PBMC isolated from HIV infected sero-positive patients were cultured ex vivo in the presence of Furosemide. PBMC that were cultured with Furosemide showed similar or greater cell divisions as cells cultured without the drug. PBMC from healthy donors showed an inverse cell growth response, with a significant inhibition of cell growth in the presence of Furosemide. |
