PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable exact image reading and to detect the shape of an original without degrading or damaging the original by radiating ultrasonic waves and detecting the shape of the original, based on reflected sounds from the original and/or original platen. SOLUTION: An ultrasonic sensor 16 is rotated, and the transmission sound of the ultrasonic wave radiated from a transmitter inside the ultrasonic sensor 16 to a book original 7 and original platen 3 and the reflected sounds of this transmission sound from the book original 7 and original platen 3 are detected by the ultrasonic sensor 16, so that the distances from the ultrasonic sensor 16 to the book original 7 and from the ultrasonic sensor 16 to the original platen 3 with respect to the position of the original platen can be detected, while utilizing Doppler effect. In this case, the distance to the book original 7 is detected, using a first reflected sound corresponding to the ultrasonic wave radiated from the transmitter inside the ultrasonic sensor 16, and the distance to the original platen 3 is detected using a second reflected sound. Based on these detected data, the height and size of the original and fingers are detected.
