PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a holding party to effectively utilize time by a holding function of voice speech in a private branch of automatic exchange having voice speech holding function. SOLUTION: This private branch automatic exchange 100 is provided with a timer means 110, that measures an elapsed time after detection of release of holding and a call control table 107 that stores a state of all extension telephone sets 101, 102 and communication opposite parties. When a party whose call is held by other party does not reply after the large of a preset time after detection of holding release, the extension telephone set 101 which has been held in a state so far is brought into a held state and the extension telephone set 102 having been in a held state is brought into a holding state in the call control table 107, and the voice speech is set again to a holding state so that the time required for calling the held party by the holding party is limited, when holding release and then the holding party can effectively utilize time.
