PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for stabilizing convergence. SOLUTION: Aging is started under operating condition of an electron gun 2. Simultaneously, a current is fed to a coil of magnetic field generators 30, 32 to generate an alternating magnetic field with a strength of 1 mT or over. Then, in the coils of the magnetic field generators 30, 32, the current flows in the direction of arrows ia and ib. Thus, the magnetic field is generated in the direction indicated by an arrow (h). By this magnetic field, an electron beam 34 receives a force in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field (arrow (f)), and the beam 34 is deflected in this direction. The beam 34 leaks from a gap between a G6 electrode 20 and an adjacent G5 V electrode, and collides into an inner wall 38 of a neck glass 4. As a result, the inner wall 38 of the neck glass 4 in the periphery of the G6 electrode 20 is rapidly electrified and its potential rises, and saturation occurs in a short time. Accordingly, convergence stabilizes in a short time.
