PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily change a telephone number stored inside a memory in a telephone book. SOLUTION: When its own telephone number is changed, a portable telephone 1 transmits a character for indicating the change of the telephone number, the old telephone number and a new telephone number together with a message for informing the telephone number change to the portable telephones 2a-2c, 3a-3c and 4a-4c and pagers 5a-5d, 6a-6d and 7a-7d which are to be informed. When the character for indicating the change of the telephone number is included in a received character message, the portable telephones 2a-2c, 3a-3c and 4a-4c or the pagers 5a-5d, 6a-6d and 7a-7d retrieve the telephone number matching with the old telephone number from the in a telephone book inside a memory and when the matching telephone number is present as a result of retrieval, the old telephone number of the telephone book inside the memory is rewritten to the new telephone number.
