The window (1) has an opening panel (4) set in an outer frame (2). The outer opening edge (3) of the window carries two hand-operated latches (5). The latches have a handle (8) which operates on a shaft (17) to release or engage a locking lever. The shaft and handle are fixed to a hardened steel mounting plate (6). The mounting plate is secured to the frame by countersunk screws (11) which engage with holes in hardened steel rods embedded in the wooden or plastic frame.
