The invention comprises water-soluble sulphated amylopectin, and water-soluble salts thereof, of molecular weight 1-30 x 10<SP>7</SP> and containing 1 to 1À8 sulphate groups per glucose unit, the sulphated amylopectin being derived from potato starch amylopectin, of molecular weight greater than 1 x 10<SP>7</SP> which has suffered minimum degradation, by sulphation under conditions causing minimal degradation. Specified salts are non-toxic salts formed with metallic cations, e.g. sodium, ammonium ions and organic bases, e.g. trimethylamine and triethylamine. Sulphation of the amylopectin may be effected by treatment with, e.g., chlorosulphonic acid, alkali metal chlorosulphonates, sulphamic acid, sulphuryl chloride, gaseous sulphur trioxide, a mixture of sodium nitrite and sodium bisulphite, and organic complexes of sulphur trioxide, e.g. sulphur trioxide, complexes of trimethylamine, triethylamine, pyridine, dimethylaniline, dioxane and bis-(2-ohloroethyl) ether. The sulphated amylopectin and salts thereof may be isolated and purified by processes of centrifugation, lyophilization, dialysis, alcohol precipitation and precipitation with quaternary ammonium salts. |
