A portable carrying case (10) for a laptop computer is disclosed which may be readily converted into a rolling case. This conversion is accomplished with minimal additional weight or bulk, by a retractable handle (40) which extends into, and through, the interior of the case, and while not in use, may be disconnected from the case. A narrow elongated roller (60) is mounted along the bottom edge of the laptop carrying case for transporting the case along the ground surface. The narrow elongated roller may also be removed from the case when it is desired to utilize the case in a non-rolling mode of operation.
