A universal impression coping system (300) and impression coping assembly (375, 385) is provided for taking dental impressions of a dental restoration site and which may be used efficaciously for both open- and closed-tray impression techniques. An inexpensive transfer impression pin (302) and coping assembly (375, 385) is further provided having registration means (303, 308) providing unique orientation of the transfer coping (385) and visual and tactile feedback for assuring accurate dental impressions using the closed tray impression technique.
