The arrangement for signal strength measurement in link-ups in a system using frequency hop involves base stations using combinations of frequencies (23,33,45,70) for frequency hop in communication with mobile stations (MO1). A mobile telephone exchange selects a unique primary frequency for each mobile station out of the frequency combinations and the mobile station transmits a primary training sequence on the primary frequency. When the mobile telephone exchange requires a signal strength measurement from a taking-over base station, it requests the base station to detect the primary training sequence on the primary frequency. - Preferably, the mobile stations transmit secondary training sequences on the other secondary frequencies in the combination. The taking-over base station can detect the primary sequence in order to separate it from the secondary training sequences in order to identify the time slot belonging to the mobile station to be measured.
