摘要
1,145,227. Making impregnated wool pads; severing by tension. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 15 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 22345/67. Headings B3A and B3E. An apparatus for continually making soap or detergent impregnated metal wool pads from a continuous web of metal wool, comprises means for positively feeding the web, means for periodically severing strips of predetermined length from the leading end of the web, means for forming the strips into rolls, do-operating punch and die means operable to confine a rolled strip between them and compress the roll into a pad, means for transferring the rolls from the roll forming means to the punch and die means in predetermined spaced succession, and means for injecting fluid soap or detergent into the compressed pad between the punch and die means. General description.-A web 20 of steel wool is drawn from a reel 21 and passes between idle rollers 22, a pair of rollers 51, 54 and a pair of feed rollers 73, 74. The rollers 51 and 54 are moved away from the feed rollers to sever the web. The severed portion drops on to the horizontal run 84 of a belt 82 and is formed into a roll as it is carried, by an inclined run 85 of the belt, against a stationary belt 86. The rolls are conveyed by a transfer wheel 27 to a die 29, two gates 101 and 102 control movement of the pads with the wheel so that they reach the die at regular intervals. A punch 146 compresses the roll into a pad in the die and while it is under compression soap or detergent is injected through the bore of the punch. The finished pads are blown out of the die and fall on to a conveyer or into a bin. Web severing mechanism.-The rolls 51 and 54, Fig. 3, are mounted at the free end of an arm 33 which is freely rotatable on a spindle 35 which is itself rotatably mounted in the machine frame and which has a flywheel 38 keyed to one end and three equal-sized chain sprockets keyed to the other end. The sprocket 41 is driven by a motor 36 and the sprocket 39 drives the roller 51. The surfaces of the rollers 51 and 54 are corrugated. The sprocket 42 drives the feed rollers 73 and 74. The arm 33 is upwardly biased by a spring 68 and is oscillated about the shaft 35 by a cam 66 which engages a roller follower 65 mounted on the upper surface of the arm. The cam 66 is driven by a separate motor (not shown) in synchronism with the remainder of the apparatus. When the cam 66 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the arm 33 is in its lowest position and the web is driven by the rolls 51 and 74. As the low point 79 of the cam reaches the follower the arm moves quickly upwards, the speed of its outer end being greater than the feed speed so that the web is broken by tension in the length between the two roll passes. Transfer wheel and control gates.-The transfer wheel 27 comprises a rigid hub and two thin spring steel flanges, the peripheries of which embrace and are forced slightly apart by the lower guide wheel 83 of the belt 82. A roll 26 leaving the belt is carried round by the flanges 27 and intercepted by a gate 102, Fig. 8, mounted on the piston rod 103 of a fluid cylinder 104. At timed intervals the gate is withdrawn from between the flanges and allows a roll 26 to be carried round to the die. Immediately before the gate 102 is withdrawn the gate 101 is projected into the wheel and pushes, towards the centre of the wheel, any roll 26 which is closely following the first roll. Rolls displaced from the outer part of the wheel in this way are removed by a deflector. Compressing and impregnating mechanism.- A roll carried round by the wheel 27 is delivered on to the face of a piston 125 which is biased by a spring 135 towards the mouth of a fixed die cylinder 124. The rolls are retained by a magnet 137. A sleeve 138 surrounds the cylinder and is biased by springs (141), Fig. 10 (not shown), towards the mouth of the cylinder. Projecting from the back of the piston is a rod 129 which slides in a block 120 and which has an axial bore which is connected to an air-line 172. The front surface 140 of the cylinder 125 is serrated. The punch 146 which co-operates with the die is actuated by a cam 112 which is driven around an axis 111. The punch 148, Fig. 13, is secured to a manifold 147 and has fixed to it an inner sleeve 154 and an outer sleeve 151. A spring 161 between the sleeves acts on the end of a plunger sleeve 158. The inner sleeve 154 has an inwardly flanged forward end which retains an outer annular plunger 169, which itself similarly retains an inner annular plunger 173. The forward end face of the inner plunger has a central bore through which passes the reduced forward end of a solid plunger 184 which is loaded by a spring 187, the other end of which abuts the base of a recess 188 in the forward face of the punch 146. As the punch approaches the die the plunger sleeve 158 engages the roll 26 and pushes it into the die, the piston 125 being pushed back against the spring 135 and the plunger sleeve moving back against the spring 161. The forward end of the outer sleeve 151 is serrated and enters the sleeve 138 to clamp the roll against the serrated end of the cylinder 125 and thereby crimp the edge. The thickness of the pad is sufficient to move the solid plunger 184 and the inner and outer annular plungers 173 and 169 off their seating rings 183, 168 and 176. Soap or detergent fluid supplied through a duct 191 and the bore 189 through the punch is then forced into the pad. When the punch retracts the pad is retained on the face of the piston 125 by the magnet 137 and is blown off by compressed air reaching the piston face through bores 205 and 207 and by a transverse air blast from a nozzle 209. The die cylinder is surrounded by a water jacket 115, fed with hot water by an inlet 116, to prevent the soap or detergent solidifying.
