The walls (7-9) defining the central region (4) of the separator include a first section (7) positioned immediately upstream from the exit opening (12) leading to the particle collection device (11), and diverging in the axial flow direction so that particles (p) are guided towards this opening. An apparatus for capturing and separating particles from a flow (F) of fluid comprises a central region defined by walls and allowing an essentially axial flow of fluid through it, an inlet (2) upstream from the central region and provided with means (5) for imparting the flow of fluid with a tangential velocity component so that the fluid is made to rotate inside the central region, an exit (3) downstream from the central region, and at least one exit opening in the central region for discharging an outer radial part of the flow (f) containing particles to a collection device that reduces the velocity of the partial flow so that the particles are capture d by this device.
