The invention relates to a rolling stand comprising back-up and working roll s for rolling plates and strips in which the upper and lower working rolls together with their corresponding back-up rolls can be displaced by pair-wis e inverse horizontal displacement of the chocks holding each roll in the colum n windows from their common vertical plane into positions in which the vertica l planes extending through the rolling axes of the working and back-up rolls cross over. The roll chocks (21) of each pair of rolls (2a, 3a and 2b, 3b) formed by the upper and lower back-up and working rolls are housed in one of two cartridges (4a, 4b) which extend horizontally into the column windows (6 ) located on either side of the rolling stand (1) and guided therein such that they can be vertically and/or horizontally crossed. The cartridges (4a, 4b) can be pivoted in opposite directions about a common, central vertical axis (S) which is embodied by upper and lower centering spigot bearings (10, 11) provided for at the cross girder and the cartridge (4a, 4b). In the area of the column windows (6) each cartridge (4a, 4b) is vertically supported on th e rolling stand frame (1) via sway braces (8) mounted on cardan joints (at 9) at both ends.
