Synthetic tear fluid comprising: at least one glycerophospholipid selected from the group consisting of phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylserines, phosphatidylethanolamines, and phosphatidylinositol; cholesterol in a glycerophospholipid:cholesterol molar ratio up to 1:1; at least one lipophilic ionic compound, preferably a ganglioside, in a glycerophospholipid:lipophilic ionic compound molar ratio of 100:1 to 10:1; at least one buffer substance; water.
