<p>A self-compensating linear motion bearing assembly (10) is provided including a bearing carriage (14) configured to be supported on a support rail (12) and having at least one bearing surface or race (34, 35). The bearing carriage (14) is adapted to receive a supply (20) of pressurized hydrostatic fluid. A carriage tape (42) is bonded to the bearing surface (34, 35) such that the tape (42) is positioned between the bearing carriage (14) and support rail (12). The carriage tape (42) is constructed from a self-lubricating high performance polymer. In the event that hydrostatic fluid pressure is lost, the carriage tape (42) permits substantially frictionless movement between the carriage (14) and the support rail (12) to prevent damage to the bearing assembly (10) and/or to the load supported thereon. In a preferred embodiment, the bearing carriage (14) includes a pair of upper and lower bearing races (34, 35). Carriage tape (42) having a compensator (38) formed therein is bonded to each of the bearing races (34, 35). Each compensator (38) includes a supply port (45), a collector (40) and an elongated relief or pocket (52). By forming the compensators (38) in the carriage tape and subsequently bonding the tape (42) to the bearing races (34, 35), the costs and complexities involved in manufacturing the bearing assembly (10) are greatly reduced.</p> |
