The present invention features test systems and methods for detecting a hepatic disorder in a mammal. The test systems and methods are designed especially for use with a primate. Preferred use of the invention involves staging the hepatic disorder in a human patient. In the test systems and methods, respiratory gas constituents are monitored to detect and/or determi ne the state of the disorder.
