An imaging unit (10) to be mated with an endoscope (16) via a coupler (12) includes at least one imaging unit body (18), with an image sensor (14), a refractive lens (20) movable disposed within the imaging unit body (18), and a first component adapted to receive an output from a focusing mechanism (48) disposed on a body (18) of the coupler (12). The coupler (12) is disposed between the endoscope (16) and the image sensor (14), and the focusing mechanism (48) disposed on the body (18) of the coupler (12) is moved to cau se the position of the refractive lens (20) to be adjusted to focus an image produced by the endoscope (16) onto the image sensor (18).
