The impact protection device includes a first device which detects the approach of the vehicle to an obstacle and produces a control signal, and a second device which on receiving the signal, shortly before impact, expels an airbag at the appropriate point which is immediately pumped up to ameliorate the impact. In this case an airbag is fitted in the roof to reduce the effect of impact on it.
