Tensile stress distribution in a metal strip (1) is measured between a roll stand (3) and a guide roll (4), e.g. by deflection of the strip and measurement of the deflection (A) using measuring unit (8) of two or more sensors positioned across the strip width. The tensile stress distribution is calculated as a function of the strip deflection, with prior correction of the data from the edge sensors which are only partially covered by the strip. The claimed apparatus includes a computer unit for carrying out calculations to establish the distribution of tensile stresses over the strip width.
