PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an adsorbent having high hygroscopicity in a wide relative humidity range and usable as an adsorbent for a heat pump, etc. SOLUTION: The adsorbent is produced through a supercritical coating step in which a reactive precursor of a hydrophilic material is dissolved in a supercritical fluid, the resultant precursor fluid is brought into contact with an adsorbent substrate in the presence of a reaction initiator and the reactive precursor is allowed to react with the reaction initiator to coat the top of the adsorbent substrate with the hydrophilic material as the reaction product.
