PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zinc system or aluminum system plated steel sheet excellent in initial adhesiveness, heat resistance, durability and preservability. SOLUTION: The surface-treated steel sheet has 0.1-10 mg/m2 coating weight of a plating layer comprising one or more selected from Fe, Co and Ni on a zinc system or aluminum system plated steel sheet and further has 10-150 mg/m2 coating weight (expressed in terms of metal chromium) of a chromate layer contg. <=25 mg/m2 (expressed in terms of metal chromium) hexavalent chromium formed by chromate treatment on the plating layer. The plated steel sheet is preferably a 95% Zn-5% Al alloy plated steel sheet.
