PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately estimate the temp. of a material and to control combustion in good balance by using an on-line model to estimate the temp. of a furnace wall in a heating furnace and the temp. distribution in the thickness direction of the material to be heated and using the measured value in the case that the surface temp. of the material is measurable to correct the estimated value and controlling the furnace temp. in the heating furnace based on the obtd. estimated value. SOLUTION: A heat pattern assuming a setting value of a furnace temp. for every control period, is prepared. A heat pattern deciding an asymptotic first order lag function to the setting value of the assumed furnace temp. for every control period, is prepared and the temp. of a material is estimated by substituting the obtd. heat pattern in an on-line model represented by a non-linear equation. The obtd. estimated value is substituted in an evaluation function and it is judged whether the assumed setting value of the furnace temp. is the optimul solution or not from the value in the evaluation function. In the case that the assumed setting value of the furnace temp. is the optimul solution, the furnace temp. in the heating furnace is controlled based on the assumed setting value of the furnace temp.
