PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber with an attached sizing composition suitable for a biomembrane carrier of the carbon fiber, not only excellent in handleability and suitable for textile finishing by a knitting machine or the like, but also capable of rapidly forming a seaweed bed and purifying water, and hardly causing environmental pollution such as water contamination. SOLUTION: This carbon fiber has 0.2-5 wt.% sizing composition for the carbon fiber comprising 10-30 wt.% alkyl monoether of a random polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide and/or polyoxyethylenepolysiloxane, and 40-80 wt.% polyvinyl alcohol-based water-soluble thermoplastic resin based on the total weight of a cellulose derivative and a polyvinyl alcohol-based water-soluble thermoplastic resin.
