PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque converter to be installed within a certain finite axial dimension, which can exert an excellent performance through adjustment of the size and position of each component. SOLUTION: This torque converter 1 is equipped with an impeller 18, turbine 19, stator 20, and lockup device 7. The lockup device 7 is located between the front cover 14 and turbine 19 and feeds the torque of the front cover 14 mechanically to the turbine 19 and is equipped with a piston member 44 capable of being coupled with and uncoupled from the front cover 14 and a torsion spring 54 installed between the piston member 44 and turbine 19 about their axial positioning and transmiting torque from one member to the other. The impeller 18, turbine 19, and stator 20 constitute a torus 6, which has a flatness L/H of 0.7 or less, where L is the shaft dimension and H is the radius. The shaft dimension Lt of the turbine is made smaller than the shaft dimension Lp of the impeller 18.
