A liquid crystal display device comprises, a pair of substrates having an electrode on a surface thereof, and a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal and a dichroic dye, wherein the dichroic dye is an anthraquinone dye exhibiting 0.08 or less of Y value represented by the following equation,Y={ SIGMA DELTA H tr,m/268- SIGMA DELTA S tr,m}(kJK-1kg-1)wherein SIGMA DELTA H tr,m is a sum of an enthalpy change of transition from -5 DEG C. to the melting point of and an enthalpy change of melting per unit weight, and SIGMA DELTA S tr,m is a sum of an entropy change of transition from -5 DEG C. to the melting point and an entropy change of melting per unit weight.
