PRODUCTION OF BETA-ALKOXYPROPIONALDEHYDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce aβ-alkoxypropionaldehyde useful as a solvent, a raw material for organic synthesis, or the like by the method not requiring a complicated after-treatment after the reaction by subjecting an acrolein to an addition reaction of an alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: (B) Acrolein in an amount regulated so that the molar ratio of the component A to the component B may be 1-10 is subjected to an addition reaction of (A) an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst composed of a carboxylic acid type weak acidic cation exchange resin at <=120 deg.C, preferably 20-100 deg.C for several hours to about 150 hours to provide the objective compound. The component A is preferably a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol, and more preferably a 1-4C lower saturated aliphatic alcohol. The component C is preferably the one regulated so that the exchanging rate of an alkali(ne earth) metal may be <=40% when carrying out the cation exchange. The component C is preferably a (meth)acrylic acid-based carboxylic acid type weak acidic cation exchange resin.
