PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic giving smoothness especially to skin and imparting gloss and a hair-finished effect to hair by adding an acetylated xanthane gum. SOLUTION: This cosmetic contains an acetylated xanthane gum having repeating units of the formula [at least one of R groups is COCH3, and the others are H; (n) is a polymerization degree] or its salt. The cosmetic preferably contains a compound of the formula in an amount of 0.001-30 wt.%. The cosmetic may, if necessary, further contain various components generally added to conventional cosmetics, such as water, liquid paraffin, squalane, a lanolin derivative, a higher alcohol, various kinds of ester oils, a silicone oil, and a polyalkylene glycol polyether.
