PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain m-hydroxyphenylacetic acid for medicinal or agrochemical raw material by treating microorganisms which originate in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and produce the enzyme specifically hydroxylating the m-position in phenylacetic acid with phenylacetic acid. SOLUTION: The objective m-hydroxyphenylacetic acid useful as a medicinal or agrochemical raw material or the like is efficiently obtained by treating a medium, a microbial cell body or a microbial cell body treatment product of the microorganism which originates in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pseudomonas aeruginosa JI 104 strain or the like) and produces the enzyme having the ability specifically hydroxylating the m-position of phenylacetic acid by acting on phenylacetic acid with phenylacetic acid to form m-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid.
