PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an agent for external use for skin having an inhibitory action on melanin production, excellently effective in reducing pigmentation after sunburn and in pale-coloring and whitening of blotches, freckles and chloasmata, and also good in safety. SOLUTION: This agent is obtained by including a compound of the formula (R1 is hydroxyl or methoxy; and R2 is H or methoxy), which compound is produced by either immersing the whole grass or a part of a plant, e.g. Thymus serphyllum in an adequate extraction solvent pref. at 0 to 100 deg.C for 1 to 168 hrs. or heat-refluxing the same in the extracting solvent, subjecting the extract to filtration, concentrating the filtrate, and by isolating the compound from the concentration through any proper means. The agent pref. contains 0.00001 to 10 wt.% of the compound.
