INTERMEDIATES TO PREPARE AQUEOUS STEROL SUBSTITUENTS HAVING CHOLESTEROL LOWERING EFFECT

PURPOSE: The intermediates is prepared which has large solubilities to water and an excellent cholesterol lowering effect. CONSTITUTION: Phytosterol and succinic anhydride or glutaric anhydride in the mole ratio of 1:1.0- 1:1.3 are reacted in a nonpolar organic solvent such as toluene, methylene cholride, tetrahydrofuran, benzene or diethyl ether in the presence of alkali catalyst such as 4-dimethylaminopyridine, pyridine or triethylamine to give the sterol intermediates(formula 1; n= 2- 3) having high reactivities to hydrophilic polymer carrier.
