PURPOSE: An active phosphorescence type liquid crystal display is to improve a color purity degree by transmitting the lights related to phosphorescent films of RGB and reflecting the lights other than RGB. CONSTITUTION: An active phosphorescence type liquid crystal display forms an image in the manner that the lights illuminated from a backlight(20) excite and illuminate phosphorescent films(34a,34b,34c), coated with color filters(40a,40b,40c), of a front glass(36) by means of the switching action of a polarizing plate(22) and a liquid crystal cell(24). Thereby, a better color purity is achieved, as the lights filtered through the color filters among the lights radiated from a mercury-vapor lamp excite the RGB phosphorescent films and unnecessary lights illuminated to a front glass are reflected.
