Isolation of the sterol component of the neutrals fraction of saponified tall oil pitch is disclosed. To the extracted neutrals, in a hydrocarbon (preferably heptane) phase, are added small amounts of water and an alcohol solvent, preferably methanol, at a relatively high temperature (preferably greater than 70 DEG C). The hydrocarbon/neutrals/alcohol/water solution is allowed to cool slowly, with agitation, to facilitate crystallization of sterols. The sterols are isolated and washed with hydrocarbon solvent. |
