PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent active matrix liq. crystal display device of a lateral electric field driving type small in a residual image by sufficiently securing the margin of a wiring structure or the like in the side of a TFT substrate and without complicating a prepn. process of a color filter. SOLUTION: An active matrix liq. crystal display device is provided with two transparent insulative substrates placed oppositely to each other, scanning lines, signal lines, thin film transistors, pixel electrodes and counter electrodes on a first substrate (18 in a figure (b)), a black matrix (7 in the figure (b)) provided with an aperture in a area placed oppositely to the pixel electrode on a second substrate (9 in the figure (b)) and three colored layers of RGB.
