PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of identifying the polarity of an electrolytic capacitor whereby the polarity identification is more surely made at a lower cost than that using an image pickup camera, without giving any mechanical stress to the electrolytic capacitor. SOLUTION: An optical sensor 5 having a light projector for projecting a light from a projecting plane and a light receptor for receiving the light emitted from the light projector at a light reception plane to provide an output showing a light reception when the light receptor receives the light emitted from the light projector is disposed so that the light projecting plane and light reception plane face the outer surface 11 of an electrolytic capacitor 1 to thereby discern the existence of a polar mark M of the electrolytic capacitor 1, based on the output showing the light reception by the optical sensor 5.
