PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drastically reduce the average wait time for access processing to both media of a DVD and a CD by predicting the kind of the newly loaded medium in accordance with the memory contents of a non-volatile memory and determining the execution sequence of a first or second trial means in accordance with the result of this prediction. SOLUTION: The kind of the medium which is loaded in a previous time and is subjected to the access processing is stored (registered) in the non-volatile memory 46 and the kind of the medium loaded this time is predicted in accordance with the kind of the previously accessed medium stored therein. If the result of the prediction is the DVD, the mode setting of the medium, such as switching and setting of the mode of the optical pickup 2 to the DVD or the like is executed and the access trial by the DVD mode is executed. If this access trial is successful, the processing is shifted to the reading-out access processing by this DVD mode. If the access trial by the DVD mode executed by receiving the prediction of the DVD is a failure at this time, the access trial by the CD mode is executed.
