1,153,701. Stained glass windows. H. TURTAUD. 18 Jan., 1967 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 2685/67. Heading B6G. [Also in Division E1] A stained glass window or like light-transmitting mosaic assembled as a unitary structure comprises a transparent support layer, which may be a single sheet of glass or a composite sheet consisting of two sheets of glass and an intermediate sheet of thermoplastic material, and a layer on one or both sides of the support layer, of spaced apart coloured glass elements bonded to an intermediate sheet of transparent non- brittle material such as thermoplastic polyvinl butyral, between the glass elements and the support layer. The spaces between the glass elements are filled with cement mortar e.g. comprising particles of coral, limestone, plastic material or metal elements e.g. anodized aluminium elements. In manufacturing such a unitary structure the support layer is placed upon a plane horizontal glass work table illuminated from below, placing the thermoplastic intermediate sheet upon the support layer, assembling the glass elements in desired design, upon the intermediate sheet and applying pressure at an elevated temperature, together with a bonding medium including or comprising the intermediate layer to form the assembly into a unitary structure. The method may be performed simultaneously or successively for an assembly on each side of the support layer. |
