PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a transmission characteristic from deteriorating by compensating polarized wave dispersion, etc., possessed by a polarized wave modulator. SOLUTION: A birefringent device 2 having a polarized wave dispersion quantity equal to that of a waveguide 1 for polarized wave modulation is coupled to a preceeding stage or a post-stage of the waveguide 1 for the polarized wave modulation. The polarized wave dispersion quantity caused in the waveguide 1 for the polarized wave modulation is offset by the polarized wave dispersion quantity of the birefringent device 2. This is suitable for the polarized wave modulator used for long distance optical transmission. |
