PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily identify a pattern while reducing the number of templates required for pattern identification and to reduce memories required for a device. SOLUTION: Concerning this pattern identifying method, one compound template T is constituted by joining pattern sections A', B' and C' to become the features of plural templates A, B and C and by performing matching operation between the compare pattern of a sample image and the compound template T, plural templates are identified by one time of matching operation.
