Molten metal is continuously refined, e. g. pigiron to steel, in at least two steps, each being followed by decanting the slag formed and the slag decanted after the last refining step being recycled into a decanter used between two successive refining vessels. As shown, a jet of oxygen containing a suspension of powdered lime, is delivered from a lance 3 on to phosphorus pig-iron fed via a channel 2 into a primary reactor 1, thereby forming a metal-slag-gas emulsion 4 which is discharged via a channel 6 into an upstream decanter 7 wherein the slag 8 separates from the metal 9, preferably facilitated by a partition wall 11, so that only the metal passes via an opening 12 and a passage 13 into a secondary reactor 14 similarly provided with a lance 15 for supplying oxygen and powdered lime. The metal-slag-gas emulsion 16 formed in the secondary reactor is discharged via a passage 18 into the last decanter 17 wherein the slag 21 separates from the metal, preferably facilitated also by a partition wall (19, Fig. 3) and further by a sloping bottom wall (23), so that only the metal passes via openings (20 and 24), into a discharge vessel (25) fitted with a nozzle (26) to be fed to a continuous casting installation. The last decanter 17 is adapted to communicate with the upstream decanter 7 by a sloping passage 27, so that the slag 21 overflows into the decanter 7 to mix with the slag 8, the mixture being discharged through a spout (10, Fig. 3).</p> |
