The cartridge has a hub (12) connected proximate to the center of the magnetic recording surface. The hub has a 45 deg angled peripheral edge (12b) adapted to selectively engage an edge of a spindle access opening. During translation into drive, hub and media (14) are translated along the z-axis within shell as the cartridge is translated linearly. Coupling of the spindle and cartridge in the disk drive is achieved through the use of a media hub formed on the disk cartridge. The media hub is formed of a ferrous material with an 8 micro inch finished surface for friction reduction. The hub comprises a bore (12a) proximate the center of the hub, peripheral outer edge, and inner ring surface (12c). The peripheral edge defines a 45 deg outer surface and a circumferential ring around the hub, that is adapted to selectively engage with a rounded edge of the spindle access opening (18c) during upward translation into the shell (18). The hub defines a stepped profile and the disk is attached to the hub along the topmost surface. A step down from the surface provides a gap between the hub and the disk which provides additional flexibility for vertical translation of hub within cartridge. The spindle is formed to complement the structure of the hub: a z-datum (40a); a round boss surface (40b) and; a conical lead-in groove (40c), enable engagement and disengagement of hub from spindle (40). The spindle is also magnetically sensitized to attract and magnetically couple the hub to spindle.
