PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily effect the AC drive of a simple matrix drive. SOLUTION: A scan circuit 2 to give a positive or negative scan voltage during the scanning operation to one electrode of a liquid crystal cell 1 having electrodes orthogonal to each other, and to give the voltage VM which is approximately a half of the scan voltage, and a signal circuit 3 to give the signal voltage corresponding to the image information to the other electrode are provided. A polarity inversion circuit 51 generates the second timing signal m2 in the scan circuit 2 in a delayed manner to the first timing signal to the signal circuit 3. In the retrace line period, the voltage to be used in the signal circuit 3 is given to the scan circuit 2, the non-scan voltage VM is given to the signal circuit 3, the voltage to be used in the signal circuit 3 is inverted by the scan circuit 2 according to the timing signal of the polarity inversion circuit 51 to effect the AC drive according to the second timing signal m2.
