PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which validly and effectively saves space. SOLUTION: An image reader 1 has an original table 7, which can slide from a side surface 5 and protrude and a reading part 25, is constituted on the opposite side to an original arrangement side with the original table 7 as a boundary. In the image reader 1, an upper surface is constituted of almost a plane. Reading of images is performed by the reading part 25 scanning after the original table 7 in a device body. Reading of the image is enabled without providing a space on the image reader 1, and at the same time, to lay other machine upon the image reader 1 also becomes possible. Much space saving can be attained.
