The visual appearance of the galvannealed coating of the steel strip (16) is determined by means of visual recording device (15) as a variable relevant to the coating quality. Signals from the visual recording device are evaluated and used after conversion for direct control of the annealing furnace (12). Besides the visual recording device (15) the claimed apparatus incorporates signal evaluation and furnace control units (17, 18). An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus incorporating signal evaluation and furnace control units (17, 18).
