An electrochemical cell is provided that includes: a can for containing electrochemically active materials including at least positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, the can having an open end a closed end; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can, the collector assembly having a collector and a cover, the collector assembly defining a collector assembly volume. In one embodiment, the collector assembly volume is less than 5.0 percent of the total volume of the battery. In other embodiments, the collector assembly volume is less than 5.0 percent (D-sized batteries), less than 6.0 percent (AA-sized batteries) and less than 7.0 percent (C- and AAA-sized batteries) of the total internal volume. In furthe r embodiments, the collector assembly volume is less than 2.5 cm3 (D-sized batteries), less than 1.7 cm3 (C-sized batteries), less than 0.50 cm3 (AA- sized batteries) and less than 0.24 cm3 (AAA-sized batteries). |
