A headlamp for vehicles according to the projection principle has a light source (10), a reflector (12), an imaging screen (2) located in the radiation path of the reflected light from the reflector to generate a light-dark boundary of the light beam emerging from the headlamp, a lens (22) through which passes the light getting past the imaging screen and a transparent cover disc (34) located after the lens in the light exit direction. The cover disc has a region (38) in which this passing light is deflected upwards. Located between the imaging screen and the cover disc is provided a screening device (42,46) by which at least a part of the light getting past the imaging screen that would pass through the region of the cover disc, is screened.
